When word of war came to east central Georgia in 1861 it was only natural that friends and family should band together to protect what is most dear --home and the land. While their story of the 48th georgia is not one full of readily recognizeable names the men still weave a telling saga of bravey, boredom, loneliness and love. Their moment of glory comes on the second day of Gettysburg when with their fellow brigade members nearly break through the Federal lines. This "close" effort leads to the more famous Pickett and Pettigrew charge of world renown. Yet the Georgians effort should not go forgotten. With never before published photos and maps, along with detailed roster, John Zwemer shares with the reader a family tale of courage and fortitude that the surviors of "the war" would find compelling.
