Product Review
"Handsomely produced and smoothly translated, these volumes favor a functionalist approach, exploring Hitler's personal role as but one of a number of explanatory factors and rejecting the notion of a carefully crafted and methodically implemented blueprint for continental domination."--History: Reviews of New Books "Maintains the same high standard of scholarship, broad analysis of economic and political factors, and clear exposition as the first [volume].An essential addition to all library collections."--Choice
Product Description
This is the second in the comprehensive ten-volume Germany and the Second World War. The five volumes so far published in German take the story to the end of 1941, and have achieved international acclaim as a major contribution to historical study. Under the auspices of the Militargeschichtliches Forschungsamt (Research Institute for Military History), a team of renowned historians has combined a full synthesis of existing material with the latest research to produce what will be the definitive history of the Second World War. This volume surveys the first year of the war deliberately begun by Nazi Germany. The authors examine the train of interconnected political and military events, and set military operations against the background of Hitler's war policy and general aims, both immediate and long term. The authors show that the conflict took a course quite different from that which Hitler had intended, but nevertheless resulted in a series of conquests for the Third Reich.
Reader Reviews
This volume is a translation of the second volume of the series 'Das Deutsche Reich und der Zweite Weltkrieg', a project of the Military Research Department of the German Bundeswehr. The complete work is planned for ten volumes, of which two are two-part. The series in general is of the highest standard and deals with military, political and economic developments affecting Germany during the war. This is not a general history of the war. Those seeking a balanced treatment of all theaters will not find it here. There is however, to my knowledge, no finer work on Germany's involvement. The quality of the translation is good. I wish that I could say the same for the production quality of the books themselves. Oxford University Press is certainly capable of producing first class books and one would expect that books in this price category would be of the highest production standard. Alas, this is not the case. These volumes are greatly inferior in quality to the German originals, which cost less than $40.00 per volume. If you cannot read German, want one of the best series on Germany's role in the war ever to appear, and don't mind paying a hefty price for a lower quality book, I do recommend them.
