Card Catalog Description
On the occasion of their 100th Anniversary, the Metropolitan Golf Association, one of the oldest and largest golf associations in the U.S., along with their historian, Dr. William L. Quirin, brings to life the wonderfully rich history of golf and the great golf courses of the Metropolitan Area in this book: Golf Clubs of the MGA - A Centennial History of Golf in the New York Metropolitan Area. Here is recorded the complete history of the MGA, from its birth at Delmonico's New York City in 1897, to its current status as a leader in golf. It also highlights in MGA's great competitions and the outstanding players who have been a part of its history. And the names will astound you - all the greats are there, from Travis, Travers, Sarazen, Nelson and the Turnesas, to latter day heroes like Strafaci, Siderowf, Albus, Zahringer and the Courvilles. The lion's share of the book however is devoted to the MGA's member clubs. Quirin has painstakingly put together complete data on every MGA member club as well as profiles on over 150 private clubs and public golf facilities. Many will be familiar stories - Bobby Jones at Inwood Jack Nicklaus at Baltusrol Sarazen at Fresh Meadow Trevino at Ridgewood A whole section of the book is devoted to golf course architects. Titled "The Creators", this chapter takes an in depth look at the talented, and sometimes colorful, sculptors who shaped the unique character of the Met Area's classic golf courses. Another section explores those courses that are no longer in existence with a section called "Land That time Forgot." The last section lists the Association's 99 years of champions, award winners and leaders - a real who's who of American golf.
