The chapters largely describe Taiwan in the 19th century. Of these, the most notable concerns the Japanese invasion of 1895. Largely ignored, even today, by many European and American-written histories of the 19th century. Yet that invasion was the harbinger of future actions of a newly industrialised and expansionist Japan, looking for territories to conquer. It was Taiwan's misfortune of geography and history to be one of the first targets. We see how the weak imperial Ch'ing government in Peking was unwilling and largely unable to offer much resistance to the invasion of Taiwan. And the Taiwanese resistance proved shortlived and futile.
