Book Description
Conceived in the early 1990s by Frank T. Inouye, who served as the first Director of what was to become the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, this is the history of the institution over forty years, from 1952 to 1993. Inouye's intent was that "each writer would contribute his personal recollections, insights and observations about his tenure as a hard administrator [T]hese essays, or memoirs, would cover a periodduring which UHH was conceived, developed, and matured." Subsequent to Inouye's untimely death in 1995, the project was completed by Edward J. Kormondy, who adhered to the original design and intent. Thus, this history is episodic, idiosyncratic, and highly personalized while also conveying the spirit, elan, and dynamism of a still emerging institution of higher learning. It remains for future historians and/or participants to encapsulate the subsequent years of its history.
About The Author
Frank T. Inouye, PhD, was the first Director of the University of Hawai'i-Hilo Branch, which eventually became the University of Hawai'i-Hilo. He served in that capacity from 1952 to 1957. Edward J. Kormondy, PhD, is Chancellor Emeritus of the University of Hawai'i-Hilo. He succeeded four Directors, one Provost, three Chancellors, and two Acting Chancellors and served from 1986 to 1993.
