Product Description
Sports fans have been slammed with tales of triumphant heroes, remarkable willpower, brilliant strategists, and against-all-odds comebacks. History, after all, is written by the winners. This book isn't about them. You Lose Some, You Lose Some focuses on those "other" competitors — the ones who distinguished themselves by holding tight to the losing end of the stick. The ones who had a shot at greatness but fumbled the handoff, dropped the easy fly ball, or bricked the breakaway layup. The ones like Chris Webber with his infamous time out, the 1919 Black Sox, Mary Decker and her fall from Olympic victory, and the Stanford football team of 1982. Lou Harry and Eric Furman tell these stories and more in candid, humorous, fact-filled entries.
Publisher Description
In YOU LOSE SOME, YOU LOSE SOME, Furman and Harry recall such familiar losers as:
Bobby Riggs battle-of-the-sexes humiliation against Billie Jean King
Mary Deckers Olympic meltdown versus Zola Budd
Greg Normans titanic crash and burn at the 96 Masters
Plus such lesser-know failures as:
The college football squad that lost 222-0
The NFL team whose fate was sealed by the brush of a Zamboni
The "other" team in the famed Hoosiers basketball match-up
Reader Reviews This book is well researched and well written. The subjects of the chapters are thoughtful and diverse. I consider myself a sports fan, but I am not the type of guy who can quote you sports statistics. It doesn't matter, because these guys can. The subjects of the chapters are interesting enough on their own, but Eric Furman and Lou Harry do a good job of making the subjects real. I personally connected with the teams/players, which made the events even more interesting. You don't have to be a sports nut to enjoy this book, but if you are then all the better. The chapters are short which makes this a perfect book for the bathroom. That is where I keep mine.
