Gr. 1-3. Ryan worries that his small stature will keep him from making a select hockey team, the Oil Kings. His dad, however, encourages him to use his speed and intelligence, reminding him that Edmonton Oilers superstar Wayne Gretzky makes up for his lack of size with speed and hockey savvy. The remainder of this picture book parallels Ryan's season on his junior team with the Edmonton Oilers' Stanley Cup-winning season. Banning's realistic, colorful illustrations add a lot to the story, especially in the paintings that evoke the world of backyard hockey rinks. The text features some words or phrases in a greater font; there's no particular reason why this needed to be done, but the bold, large-type words are not off-putting. A final page gives further details on Gretzky's hockey career. For young, hard-core hockey fans. Todd Morning Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
Book Description
Part of The Hockey Heroes series, Gretzky’s Game tells the story of a young boy who loves to play hockey. Because he’s small for his age, he’s always getting pushed around by the other players. However, he’s determined to make the team — even though it means a lot of extra practice just to pass the tryout. Throughout the long hours at the rink, the thrilling exploits of his hero, Wayne Gretzky, who is leading the Edmonton Oilers to their first-ever Stanley Cup, inspire him to keep trying. Hockey’s golden age is recalled in vivid detail in this tale of hard work, determination, and the importance of holding on to one’s dreams.
Reader Reviews
This book is a winner for little boys with big hockey dreams. My son enjoyed the story, along with the historical information on the back page.
