Grade 3-6–Miller begins with an account of the development of Hurricane Katrina as it struck Florida and then threatened the Gulf Coast. She discusses the subsequent flooding of New Orleans, the damage it caused, rescue and recovery attempts, and planning for the aftermath of future hurricanes. The author includes a clear scientific description of hurricanes, defining key terms. Color photographs and graphics help explain concepts such as the structure of a hurricane, Katrinas path, and the conditions endured by the victims. Charts show the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale and list Americas deadliest recorded hurricanes. The only flaw is that while Miller describes New Orleans well, she fails to provide a map to help readers understand the citys geography.–Jeffrey A. From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. This clearly written, concise volume from the Deadly Disasters series discusses the nature of hurricanes, the course of Hurricane Katrina across Florida and into the nation's Gulf Coast, and the storm's effects, particularly on people who were in New Orleans after the levees were breeched and parts of the city were flooded. Interspersed among the information are many short personal narratives of those who experienced the storm and its aftermath. Clear, color photographs and maps illustrate the book, which concludes with a chart of the ten deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history, chapter notes for the many quotes, a glossary, and recommended books and Web sites. Other topics covered in the series include earthquakes, terrorist attacks, and floods. Carolyn Phelan Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
