The book is generally written in simple language accessible to non-linguists, but also provides introductory linguistic concepts for the non-initiated. The book is a nice, simple reference of English linguistic history and even makes predictions of where the language will go in the future (though, of course, this part of the book is highly speculative). This would probably be a good book for any high school senior or college freshman considering a pursuit in linguistics, English, or history, but would also probably be a nice read for anyone generally interested in the linguistic history of English.
