Grade 9 Up-While the focus of this title is on Western figures, significant individuals from Eastern countries are also included. A 10-page introduction that provides an overview of the time period is followed by more than 400 alphabetical entries. Those included made "contributions to European culture" in the areas of religion, philosophy, education, and politics. Omitted are "popes, kings, and queens if their cultural contributions were in only one area." The entries, ranging from a half page to several pages, are clearly written in a straightforward style, though the vocabulary may prove challenging for some users. Cross-references are indicated with a simple asterisk. The very brief bibliographies at the end of each entry are cumulated at the end of the book. The general and name indexes are complete.
