From Booklist
Innovative Hip-Hop uses original raps to introduce U.S. history. The songs are performed, along with high-quality original music, on an accompanying CD, but the book can stand alone. In chapters that move from Columbus' voyage to America through the civil rights movement, the authors expand on each rap's lyrics with insights, quotes, and solid facts. Appendixes include a guide to cultural references and the full text of the Declaration of Independence. Creative and dedicated to serious instruction, this title in the author's Flocabulary series makes history relevant to kids' lives and will be a popular supplement to class work. Product Description
Featuring an audio CD with 45 minute of original, educational, and cutting-edge music, this latest entry in the innovative Flocabulary series turns U.S. history—from pre-Colonial days through World War II—into an enjoyable experience. No more yawning through lists of dull, dry dates: this effective and engaging combination of rhythm and rhyme makes remembering the basic curriculum as easy as apple pie. The topics range from the first meeting between the Native Americans and the European explorers to the Seeds of Revolution (“Taxin’ and Representin’”), from Lincoln and the Civil War to the Industrial Revolution, from the Great Depression to Bombs Over Berlin. It’s perfect for any student preparing for the AP placement test or the SAT II.
Reader Reviews
What a great tool. While I don't expect the songs to ever make it to the American Top forty they are adequate and have a good beat. They have actually made it fun (or dare I say easy) to learn history!
