Reader Reviews
Usually in every philosophy cirrucla there is a course or two dedicated to teaching 'theories of mind' or 'conciousness.' While scientific psychology has now assumed many aspects of the study of the human mind once assumed by philosophers, until recently the mind was considered (along with God or our knowledge of things) one of the several perennial questions of philosophy. To an extent this is still true, but it is interesting to see how diverse interpretations of the human mind have arisen in philosophy, religion and ancient science, as well as its origin, function and destiny. McDonald's book covers theories of mind from the Bible and Greek epics to David Hume. McDonald has a strong background in phenomenology and analytical philosophy and is able to bring important clarity to classical theories of the mind, as well as not hastily dismissing anything sounding 'metaphysical.' This book is useful reading for anyone interested in the history of mind or the philosophy of mind.
