From School Library Journal
YA This well-documented, non-partisan biography of Johnson should attract several types of readersfans of stranger-than-fiction true-life stories; students of mid-20th Century American history; and those who desire a picture of LBJ the man, not the myth. Conkin presents a realistic portrait of Johnson as a human being, with talents and flaws, strengths and weaknesses. The book is well-organized. Chapters on the Great Society and Vietnam detail many events of those significant years. It is evident that Johnson shaped the times as the times shaped the man. Perhaps the book gives no new insights into the life and times of LBJ, but the facts are told in a clear, fresh style. There is no bibliography, but there is a chronology and a section titled, ``Sources,'' each part of which corresponds to a chapter in the book and tells in essay form from whence the material in that chapter was gathered. From Library Journal
This solidly researched and well-written account of Johnson's life and career, which inaugurates Twayne's new series, steers clear of controversial treatment, such as that found in Doris Kearns's Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream ( LJ 6/1/76) or Robert Parker's Capitol Hill in Black and White ( LJ 5/1/86). While Conkin makes some attempt to discover the roots of Johnson's personality in his Texas upbringing and background, he chooses to avoid "psychological explanations" of Johnson's complex character and personality. As a result, the book is well-balanced in its treatment, though somewhat bland, and fails to offer any startlingly new interpretations. Recommended with the above reservations. Scott Wright, History Dept., Coll. of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.
