Reader Reviews
Jack Engelhard has written a compelling saga of the way it was when our dreams took wings and the only limitations were those set by our imaginations. Seen through the eyes of four very different young people...(Ben...Holacaust survivor and Israeli Army veteran...Ritchie...guitar-strumming, happy-go-lucky young man from the upper middle classes of Connecticut...Cliff...nationally known celebrity from the streets of Philadelphia...and Louise...the girl of every guy's dreams...and a rising star in her own right)...he takes you to the very knife edge of The New Frontier... Greenwich Village...the Village of Protest...of Dylan...Baez...Collins...Cosby...Streisand...of Lenny Bruce and George Pryor. If you remember those halcyon days first hand...this book will REALLY bring them back. Having yet again just finished the book, their ghosts seem so firmly planted in my head... the nostalgia becomes unbearable at the last...because you can see them...see them all in their youthful innocence. And so you weep for them... and as you weep for them you weep for your own lost youth... not only your unrealized dreams from that time, but the dreams that were realized...however briefly...and then vanished with youth itself. And then you weep for the loss of the ability to dream...the realities of late middle age that surround you...grateful indeed for so many blessings you still have...but undeniably conscious of the fact that there are no more youthful dreams to dream...and you have just been reminded by an extremely gifted author just how good it felt to dream, and to share those dreams with other vibrant young people...so full of themselves and full of their times... so full of life and love and laughter. If you're the slightest bit curious about the environment in which some of the entertainment giants above got their start, or just wonder what the fuss was all about back in the Sixties...then this book is the most scintillating, engaging, soulful, authentic work you can buy...bar none..no exceptions. Granted it is a story told through the medium of part fact, part fiction...but it is 100% TRUTH. I know... I was there. The author was there too, though I didn't know him at the time. But be warned...from the moment you first partake of this intoxicating wine of American Youth at its most hopeful...most full of dreams...most invigorated and confident...you WILL NOT be able to put it down. You'll laugh...you'll cry...you most likely will love and you just might hate...but you WILL NOT be able to put it down. Jack Engelhard will launch you on an emotional rollercoaster of a story that runs the gamut...the fates of the characters run the gamut...the mood of America runs the gamut...the character of the times portrayed runs the gamut. A true literary classic penned by a literary genius of the first water. Yes...you'll want to feel and do many things as the story unwinds...but you will not put it down until....The Bitter End. Five Stars John W. Cassell John W. Cassell is the author of five novels on the American Counterculture of the 1960's-1970's: Crossroads: 1969, Odyssey: 1970, Hell's Quest: 1971, DeVilliers County Blues: 1972 and An Aquarian Tragedy [the last written under the pen name of james Mundell and about 1970], as well as several "Amazon Shorts" short stories...all available at Amazon.
