Grade 7 Up-- An unsuccessful attempt to review the events of November 22, 1963 and the investigation which followed the Kennedy assassination. Hoare also offers a brief assessment of the Kennedy presidency and a perspective on modern political assassinations. This is obviously too much material for a 64-page book which contains many illustrations. Hoare offers little background, discusses so many theories about the assassination, and includes so many people that most readers will be lost. Numerous black-and-white photographs add little to the book. Some of them are unclear or unrelated to the text, and others have been used in too many other publications. The biggest failing, however, is that the book lacks a true assessment of how the Kennedy assassination affected our country. Hoare never gives readers a sense of the loss which Americans felt at Kennedy's death, or of the disillusionment which followed the investigation of the assassination. Kennedy's death remains a fascinating subject, one which draws many readers. However, this book has nothing to add to the knowledge or understanding of that terrible day in Dallas, and most libraries should continue to use titles such as The Day Kennedy Was Shot (Bantam, 1968; o.p.) by Bishop as well as other popular titles about the assassination and investigation. --Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, Mo.
