From Booklist
Esteemed since its founding as a center of learning, Harvard has captivated the nation as a center of controversy (the school's first master was indicted for beating his assistant). Schlesinger recounts Harvard's turbulent history in compelling detail, interpreting the string of ideological and cultural conflicts as a series of fights for the freedom of truth (veritas) against the repression of blind prejudice. Readers thus revisit the Revolutionary-era clashes between Harvard's Patriots and Tories, the antebellum struggles between abolitionists and Southerners, and the Vietnam-era assault on the ROTC led by the student radicals of the SDS. Schlesinger also scrutinizes the very recent past, including the skirmish between supporters and critics of Harvard's African American Studies program. It may rankle conservative readers that in all Harvard's political disputes, Schlesinger sees veritas exclusively on the side of the progressive Left. But several Harvard controversies resist any simple -conservative-versus-progressive interpretation: Who, for instance, was on the side of the angels in the eighteenth-century campus uproar over terrible butter in the dining hall? A spirited academic history sure to attract numerous nonacademic readers. Bryce Christensen Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
