It’s only human to be fascinated by disasters—and uplifted by reports of survival in the face of overwhelming circumstances. Larry Pletcher takes you back to Massachusetts’s most catastrophic events, vividly re-creating the moments that changed the Bay State forever. The twenty-one true stories in Massachusetts Disasters are a chilling reminder to expect the unexpected and to respect the powerful, often deadly forces of nature. Experience the drama of: Boston’s fight from the brink of destruction during the great fire of 1872 The blizzard of 1888—New England’s benchmark winter storm The 1919 deadly rupture of a two-million-gallon container of molassaes The 1942 Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire that took nearly 500 lives The 1956 rescue of the passengers and crew of the Andrea Doria The underground miracle in the 1990 AMTRAK crash
About The Author
Larry Pletcher has investigated the natural treasures and history of New England for nearly thirty years. After graduating from Princeton University and receiving an advanced degree from UCLA, Larry returned east and combined a professional career with freelance writing, photography, and avid exploration. A resident of Warner, New Hampshire, where he lives with his wife and daughter, Larry has called an old New England farmhouse home since 1975. He is the author of It Happened in Massachusetts and several outdoor recreation guides.
Reader Reviews
I must give this author credit for staying away from most of the overly reported disasters (e.g The Perfect Storm) yet he did not offer any new insights on other deeply covered stories like the Worcester Tornado and the Coconut Grove Fire. This book is really a series of vignettes of a series of disasters but it lacks depth and really any context of how the disasters were anything more than human dramas. I also have to question some of the selections. Obviously the most fameous Massachusetts disasters, (mentioned above) need to be in there but the selection of the Spanish Influenza and the Andrea Doria were disasters with Massachusetts connections rather than true Massachusetts disasters. By the same token the Station Night Club fire could have been included as that killed more people from Massachusetts than the Andrea Doria. Lastly, the inclusion of an Amtrak deraliment under Back Bay station hardly measures up to some other events. Overall an interesting if uneven work.
