During the early part of the 20th century, technological advances in the printing industry spawned a new fad: postcard collecting. Publishers dispatched photographers to communities throughout the country and produced iconic images that formed a portrait of the nation. Travelers used postcards to communicate with friends and family and to maintain a visual record of their itineraries. Although the fad was short lived, thousands of postcards and, in some cases, entire collections survive to this day. Through vintage postcards, South Boston shows one of Boston’s most gorgeous neighborhoods with miles of sandy beaches, shaded thoroughfares, and well-kept brick and wood frame homes. South Boston is an Irish American enclave that has probably undergone fewer physical and social changes than any other section of the city.

Jim Sullivan, an English teacher at South Boston High School, has accumulated an extensive array of South Boston postcards. In South Boston, he provides a richly detailed historical context for these fascinating images of a bygone era.

As a life-long Southie resident, I eagerly anticipated this addition to the Postcard History Series. I wasn't disapointed. Besides being wonderfully illustrated and seamlessly written, it provided me with information about my hometown that is both fresh and eye opening. Outsiders, many of who formed their opinion of Southie as a result of the forced busing crisis, need to read this book. It will give them a fuller appreciation for the neighborhood. Southie residents will find alot of interesting and not well-known facts about their great neighborhood. A great book for your coffee table!
