Product Description
In the 1700s and early 1800s, Biddeford was a small, prosperous village dependent on fishing, lumbering, shipbuilding, and merchant mills for its wealth. In 1830, New Englandís industrial revolution brought massive investment and development to the town. The Saco Water Power Company was developed, two large textile companies were established, and six hundred buildings and thirty-six streets were constructed between 1829 and 1849. Biddeford quickly became the most ethnically and culturally diverse city in Maine. The city thrived for more than one hundred years, but the Great Depression brought hard times to Biddeford. Through images, Biddeford tells the compelling story of this remarkable city. ÝÝ
About The Author
Author Charles L. Butler Jr. was born in Biddeford and has a strong interest in New England history. He is a charter member and former president of the Biddeford Historical Society. Now retired, he serves as the societyís secretary and advisor.
Reader Reviews "Biddeford" contains amazing images of the city but it's typical of Arcadia books. It lacks any real information that would make this book useful for research, esp. in 50 years. You simple do not learn anything from this book. What it lacks is basic information, who built the building in the photo, who lived there, and most important what happened to the buildings in the image. Is it still standing, is it gone? Many of the images in this book do not even include a location. It's a nice picture book, but not worth the cover price as it has nothing to offer anyone looking for real facts. Almost all Arcadia books suffer from the same problem.
