Reader Reviews
I have been a fan of many of Professor Chris Potholm's books for quite some time. I even have read his books about African politics. Therefore, you should know that you can count me as a fan. However, I must admit that this book left me a bit non-plussed. I'm not sure if it was the format or how the book was organized, but to my mind this was not about the "dynamics" of anything. It is about his thoughts of what was occuring in Maine at various times in various election cycles. (Note to editor: It would probably have been a good idea to give us the date of the columns. This is essentially a compilation of many columns he has written in the Lewiston Sun Journal) His columns are topical and perhaps it is just me that I am not a great fan of assembling these sorts of observations and arguing that they have some larger meaning than they appear to at first reading. A lot of the observations that he makes are about the contributions of many people whom the rest of us would never know about to various election races or referendum votes. It is kind of an "Insider Program" to who is doing what in various elections. The names kind of wash over you and none of them stick, unless you are a prospective candidate or have a referendum question you are planning to support. In other columns he is persuasive as to why one candidacy or another or referendum question or another will prevail or not. However, the only "dynamics" that I as a reader picked up on was why whatever marketing ploy that was used was successful as opposed to competing efforts. There are few people who have had as much influence over the election process in the State of Maine in the last thirty five years as this author. The success of Bill Cohen as an elected represntative from Maine (Congressman from the 2nd District and US Senator) would probably not have happened without Chris Potholm. The referendum questions he has been involved with are too numerous to list and his advice and assistance to many other individual campaigns are legion. On several occaisons he praises his son Eric, who is part of another political consulting service, for his contributions to the Maine political scene. Nothing could make a father prouder than to see a son following in some large footsteps and doing it so very well. However, is this part of what the title of the book states? Perhaps and perhaps not. In my judgement, this book is a fine snapshot of what has been happening in many political races in Maine for the time of author's involvement in it. I don't see it as anything larger than that, however that is no reason not to let The Professor take you back through some very interesting times and people.
