Product Description
Maine steamboats existed in two different arenas: the ocean steamers that traveled up the coast and the inland steamers, which are the focus of this book. The Maine wilderness once witnessed an enormous movement of people, goods, and mail through steamboat traffic. Originally freighters provided supplies and merchandise for the lumber industry and, with the lack of roads, they were the only dependable transportation to many sporting lodges and resorts. Boat traffic also delivered indispensable goods to lakeside villages and outposts. Eventually sportsmen and vacationers discovered the beauties of the lakes and mountains, and steamboat companies formed early in the 19th century to serve the growing numbers of visitors and businesses. Thousands of families trekked from the southern cities to the interior to delight in a popular Northeast pastime. Getting to places was a chore as well as an adventure, and the railroads and the steamboats did the job. At one time, they facilitated the cycles of life in the Maine woods.
About The Author
Donald A. Wilson grew up in Maine and is a fourthgeneration Maine business owner. A land surveyor, master guide, and historian, Wilson is widely published. This is his fifth title with Arcadia Publishing.
Reader Reviews Maine's Steamboating Past is part of the Images of America series, and it is an absolute gem. It is a pictoral history, with articulate, well-researched commentary by author Donald A. Wilson. Anyone with the remotest connection to the magical lakes of Maine will become awestruck by these haunting images. The heyday of steamboating on the Maine lakes was the early 1900s, and they had disappeared by the mid-1900's, so there are increasingly few living people who recall those old steamers. Yes, there are a few early stemers remaining, such as the Katahdin, at Moosehead Lake, but they are tourist attractions, not the public transport they once were. The book is organized into six sections covering the Belgrade Lakes, Moosehead Lake, the Rangeley Lakes, the Sebago and Long Lakes region, smaller lakes, and the Penobscot River. But the book is about the boats, and to some extent, their captains. The destinations themselves take a back seat; don't look for familiar vistas in the backgrounds. In addition to mostly very clear black and white photographs, Wilson also illustrates steamer tickets, advertising flyers, as well as schedules and rates. In addition to their use as passenger ferries, steamboats were used as mail carriers, freighters, icebreakers, log carriers, and tug boats. The photos show all of the shapes and sizes, from the small, sleek, and graceful steam launches not much bigger than a canoe, to the 500 passenger Katahdin, launched on Moosehead in 1914. It is incredible that Wilson managed to find out so much about the people and places and the boats that connected them so long ago. You cannot help to be amazed by his scholarship. And when you catch yourself daydreaming about those days and those boats, you will have Maine's Steamboating Past to thank for the clarity of the vision.
