    From Library Journal
In 1913 a group of exceptional women formed the Castine (Maine) Woman's Club. During the next thirty years the club concerned itself with worthy causes and self-education. It tackled issues large and small, from drinking fountains at the local school to women's suffrage and the plight of war-stricken China. Women's clubs were a distinctly American phenomenon; they emboldened women to proclaim, "We are no longer ashamed of our intelligence on the affairs of nations." Although Castine, a picturesque village on the coast of Maine, is a perfect example of small-town America, the minutes and commentary printed here reveal minds and spirits that were anything but small. The pen-and-ink illustrations are charming. Of regional interest. Priscilla E. Pratt, York Coll. Lib., CUNY
