From Publishers Weekly
For half a century, Gould's weekly column in the Christian Science Monitor has had a devoted national following. This collection ranges from his tales of his children as toddlers to those of his granddaughters playing field hockey on opposing college teams. A 1959 dispatch frets about the loss of a three-tined kitchen fork; the piece is followed by a remarkable response--which included dozens of forks--from Gould's readers. The subject of one 1987 column is his mother's 100th birthday, when she took her first ride on a fire engine. Gould reminisces about winter camping, railway postal clerks and Maine strawberry festivals. He purveys a special brand of Down-East wit, whimsy and nostalgia. From Library Journal
Appearing weekly in the Christian Science Monitor for over 50 years, Gould's columns of observations and insights have delighted countless readers around the world. This collection of some 75 essays is for all lovers of the ways of New England and rural America. Gould has few peers in capturing the unique life that exists in bucolic Maine, from the working of the lobster traps, to the esoteric ways of the backwoods lumber camps, to the never-mundane times of Maine farm life, topography, climate, and a host of other things. He is especially adept at describing those wonderfully unique personalities that inhabit his part of the world, always lovingly and with respect but not without a hint of wryness. Gould's writing is consistently fresh. Even the occasional clunker of an essay (Gould's early 1960s rave against the postal service for daring to regulate first-class letter size due to the dawning of automation is a bit much) cannot detract from the sheer joy of this collection. Highly recommended for all public library collections. David M. Turkalo, Social Law Lib., Boston Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.
