Reader Reviews
Heard's account of the Dakota War or the Great Sioux Uprising of 1862 is one of only a few primary sources of this much-overlooked event in Indian-White relations. He was an attorney and a young officer in the militia forces that quelled the intial stage. He also acted as a recorder at the highly irregular and unfair military tribunals which tried nearly 400 Dakota men, sentencing just over 300 of them to death. Some of these proceedings lasted no more than 5 minutes per man. Heard is one of our few sources of detail regarding this tribunal. He also provides information about the uprising in general. It is a valuable history because he provided one of our few primary accounts, from someone intimately acquainted with some aspects of this event. The modern reader must be very careful however with this work. The prejudices and strong feelings of the day are clearly expressed. Yet, the narrative is quite revealing, for those very reasons. To gain a balanced view of "both sides", as it were, one must consult other works. This was originally published in 1864 and library copies are scarce and fragile. I was so glad to see that the University of Michigan Reprint Series undertook to reprint it. I was dismayed to find the quality of the printing to be poor. (I have contacted the Reprint Series to express my concern and have received courteous responses, but no real "answer" or solution to the problem.) To put it simply, the printing is skewed on the page, and to be able to read many of the pages, one must bend the book back, opening the pages to such a degree that it strains the spine and binding. Even then, some of the sentences are difficult to read. (Unfortunately, I have noticed this on other Reprint Series books.) In summary, I highly recommend this book to the serious reader curious about how white people of that day viewed these events, with the caution about consulting other works for a more balanced view of the overall uprising. My only reason for assigning a "3" is the quality of the reprinted volume itself.
