This is one of the best books published on animal behavior for the general reader. The author, a zookeeper herself, brings a positive, upbeat attitude to the topic of zoos, their future, and the animal collections they maintain. Benyus's unique format provides a logical approach to the subject of animal behavior that the reader can apply to observations in zoos or in the wild. Following a discussion of the role of zoos and an overview of the general principles of animal behavior, Benyus devotes the major portion of her book to covering twenty species, most of whom would commonly be found in a mid- to large-sized zoo. For each species, Benyus describes basic behaviors, illustrated with black-and-white drawings, and provides a checklist chart of behaviors that could be observed and recorded while watching an animal exhibit. This book is highly recommended for its ability to convey concise yet readable information for the reader.

Lavishly illustrated with black and white drawings, thoroughly modern in its approach to animal behavior, and absolutely readable, "Beastly Behaviors" is a book any animal lover will enjoy reading. Chock full of facts, the book is aimed at an audience stretching from junior high to adults; parents interested in the book for their children should be aware that sexual behavior is described very frankly, should that be a concern.
