Polynesian design and new quilting patterns allow you to go beyond the typical echo quilting. Awed by the beauty of the islands and fascinated by their handwork, Ms. Fleming began making Hawaiian quilts more than twenty years ago. Over a dozen of her original quilt designs are featured, including an extraordinary variety of folded cutwork patterns and quilting designs that reflect a traditional approach to this style of quiltmaking. A brief overview of Hawaiian quilting and a glossary of Hawaiian terms will help you give special meaning to your quilt creation. Celebrate the history, philosophy, and natural beauty of an alluring locale in this exotic collection of patterns. AUTHORBIO: Vicky Fleming's orientation to the tropics began at an early age. When she was in third or fourth grade in Michigan, her teacher asked if east was to the left or right. Vicky answered, "Left." The teacher wouldn't budge on insisting that Vicky had given the wrong answer. The teacher hadn't specified "on the map," however, and in Vicky's mind, she was standing in Michigan looking toward Florida, so east was indeed on the left. REVIEW: Imagine a paper-cut paradise! About The Author
Vicky Fleming's orientation to the tropics began at an early age. In her late twenties, Vicky found herself high and dry in landlocked Colorado. On her first trip to Hawaii, in 1980, she fell in love with the moist, fragrant islands. She had enjoyed needlework all her life, so, after she returned to Colorado, taking up Hawaiian quilting was a natural. Hawaiian quilting gave Vicky a way to stay connected to the tropics. She joined the Ha'ole Connection quilt group to quilt Hawaiian and share stories and information on Hawaiian topics once a month. In 1993, Vicky moved to Florida. Because there are so many parallels between life in Hawaii and Florida, Vicky feels she is more aware than ever of how the kama'aina (locals) of Hawaii live, and the encroachment of the modern way of life upon the natural world. Vicky continues to enjoy Hawaiian quilting, as well as pursuing art quilt ideas. Vicky is a member of Peace River Quilt Guild. She and her husband own a 35-foot sailboat, which takes up whatever time isn't spent quilting.
Reader ReviewsThis book has everything you need to know to make your first Hawaiian quilt - history, Hawaiian terminology, techniques from start to finish, and gorgeous patterns to choose from. Hawaiian quilts are a unique quilting tradition; appliques based on island nature, cut using a snowflake folding method and generally quilted with radiating "echo" lines. Books on this technique are few and far between, and this one is excellent. Aloha and happy quilting!
