Grade 3-5-A group of eight stories from classical ballets. The retellings are simple and, though some may lack an aura of majesty and drama, they are enlivened by the use of rich vocabulary. The versions of Giselle and The Nutcracker seem rather abbreviated, almost to the point of confusion. Perhaps the most dramatic retelling is that of The Firebird. The colored-pencil and watercolor illustrations throughout are delicate and lovely, but they are far from plentiful. Giselle, Swan Lake, and The Firebird, for example, receive gorgeous treatment, but The Nutcracker and some others have very little art. Libraries that own Violette Verdy's Of Swans, Sugarplums and Satin Slippers (Scholastic, 1996) or Geraldine McCaughrean's The Random House Book of Stories from the Ballet (Random, 1995) may not need this book unless demand is high.
