Reader Reviews
I got this book last week, and despite being a novice on guitar I've learned to identify all the notes along the fretboard with ease. I'm working on the moveable scale and chord patterns, and making quick progress. But best of all, I understand why it works. Now my hands just need to catch up with my brain (no small feat, of course). This is not a magic shortcut to playing the guitar. The author never promises that you'll "play like a pro in six weeks"--or even in six years. What he does promise is to help you understand the logic of the guitar neck using the circle of fifths and other basic concepts of music theory. You will learn the "why" as much as the "how". Once you've grasped this logic, the fretboard will no longer seem like a random web of notes. I can hardly wait to get through the sections on modes and advanced chords and scales. I recommend this book for an upper-level beginner. Buy it as a supplement to your lessons, as soon as you've started learning the circle of fifths for chord progressions. If you already understand music theory on another instrument, buy this book right away. I would also recommend it to a more advanced player who feels less than 100% confident in their ability to identify all the notes on the fretboard. In addition, it would help any guitar instructor who struggles with explaining this stuff to their students. (One caution: a few typographical errors made it past the editors, some of which could generate confusion. After you buy the book, check out the author's BEAD guitar website for corrections.)
