Bill Tarrant offers a lifetime of practical experience and insight in The Field & Stream Upland Bird Hunting Handbook. In this, his last and possibly best book on hunting, he describes: how to hunt for grouse, woodcock, pheasant, quail, and a dozen other game birds; which guns and ammunition are best for each species; the habits and best times of day to hunt for each bird; tips and techniques to flush your quarry; how to train gun dogs to work most effectively; and much more. The Field & Stream Upland Bird Hunting Handbook offers the best practical advice on how to locate and hunt all of the popular games birds of North America. Tarrant also includes valuable tips on hunting with different gun-dog breeds and how to handle and care for dogs in the field. (6 X 9, 128 pages, black and white photos, illustrations)
Reader ReviewsI can't help but feel a touch of sadness when I read this book--this was the last book Bill Tarrant wrote before he died. If you want a good look at the life of Bill Tarrant, read the introduction to "Best Way To Train Your Gun Dog." Tarrant was a fantastic writer and dedicated his life to ending brutality toward field dogs. I personally, looked at dogs in a new light after reading Best Way, so am thankful for Tarrant. In this book, he covers the whole range of upland game birds using relevant info. This book isn't particularly in depth in tactics, though. As the other review stated, it's a great primer. Furthermore, it's Tarrant's last song, so is filled with his opinions/views on the sport... not that they're wrong, but they are his opinions. More than a reference book, I gleaned a lot from this book learning about the author and his times. In addition to this book, you should also buy Tarrant's "Best Way..." and Datus Proper's "Pheasants of The Mind."
