PreSchool-K--A young elephant and his fun-loving family are back in another endearing story. It's Humphrey's birthday and he is excited about his upcoming party. He is thrilled with his presents from his family, especially a blue-and-yellow superhero suit with a red cape. He puts on the costume and greets his party guests. The day passes quickly and the only mishap occurs when Humphrey's sister jumps into the wading pool and accidentally splashes him. Their mother saves the day by explaining that even superheroes sometimes get wet, and everyone enjoys a tasty meal and cake. The whimsical watercolor-and-pencil illustrations are done in warm, pastel tones. With their rounded bodies and slightly awkward posture, the characters look like stuffed toys. Purchase where the other books are popular.--Kristin de Lacoste, South Regional Public Library, Pembroke Pines, FL

From Booklist
PreS. Once again, Hunter captures the subtle intricacies of family life through her delightful elephant family featuring young Humphrey and his older sister, Lottie. In this installment, Humphrey receives a very special present for his birthday: a superhero suit. He wears it to his party, which garners him more presents and happy guests. But when the wading pool comes out, Lottie splashes Humphrey, soaks his suit, and the tears flow. An apology from Lottie and wise words of counsel from his parents save the day. Less substantial than other titles in the series, this nevertheless does a nice job of capturing the ambience of a children's party with all its bouncy ups and its inevitable downs. As always, the homespun pictures are a special element, drawn and colored with gentleness and humor. This is realism with honeyed edges.

Reader Reviews
This review is from: Humphrey's Birthday (Hardcover)
My daughter stumbled across a stuffed Humphrey elephant, and it quickly became her most prized possesion. Humphrey is popular is Great Britain, but harder to find here. We were thrilled to find out that there's a series of books too. The illustrations in the books are just precious. The colors are soft, and the details are darling. Humphrey's Birthday is very sweet. The author puts you back into the mind and innocence of being little and having a special day. My daughter has enjoyed this book for more than a year, and she still wants to read it all the time. This book makes a GREAT birthday present/keepsake book. If you like this one, check out the whole series!
