From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Hutchins's beloved Billy the monster is back, eager for his birthday treats. The clawed, green youngster hoards his new ball, jump rope, and toy car. Any suggestion of sharing with his guests is met with the child's insistent reply, "No! It's MY birthday." His final gift is one he can not play with on his own, so the tables turn, at least temporarily. Naturally, all ends well, with all of the party goers sharing and having fun. Full-color art, done in gouache, shows wonderfully weird characters in minimalist settings. With its arresting colors and gentle lesson, this tale will be a super storytime selection.

From Booklist
Monster siblings Hazel and Billy are back from that old favorite
The Very Worst Monster (1985). Billy is the birthday boy, but like many a human child, he has a hard time sharing his special day. As he opens each new gift (a ball, a jump rope, a car), his guests want to play, but Billy stubbornly declares, "No! It's MY birthday!" But when he gets a game that requires more players, Billy finds it hard to find anyone who will play with him. Hutchins combines a warm, knowledgeable sense of children with lots of funny touches in her gouache paintings of the monster children. A good story hour book, with the added bonus of a bold typeface and simple sentences that make it a good choice for new readers
