Grade 4-9 Beginning with a brief history and an explanation of what makes a boat float, Boating Basics covers a very broad range of topics in only 48 pages. It describes the pleasures of canoes, rowboats, sailboats and small outboard boats with enthusiam and encouragement. The how-to-do-it approach, however, is inappropriate for the young audience at which the book is aimed. None of the boating activities described should be attempted by beginners without adult supervision, the need for which is never mentioned. The difficulties or possible dangers of the sport are understated. In an attempt to explain the principles of sailing simply, for example, Halsted gives information that is incomplete and misleading. Many terms or concepts are introduced without explanation, such as tack, drowning and dinghy. Drawings often do not appear on the same page as the information they were intended to illustrate, and one drawing of a "bowline" knot on a post is inaccurate and confusing.
