Boonshaft's books ought to be required reading for any aspiring band director/music education major. His first book, 'Teaching Music with Passion,' received rave reviews. And 'Purpose' will be no different. For example - as a percussionist in high school and college bands, I can totally relate to his chapter "Percussionists: the Missing Peace?" What do you do with a group of kids who may not be playing for large chunks of the rehearsal? Is is realistic to expect them to behave when they're off by themselves in the back of the room? Boonshaft offers practical tips to solve these and other issues (including 'air drumming' and other things you would never have thought of.) His suggestions are useful for middle school/high school/ and college. His writing style is humorous and accessible no matter what your level of music education. TWO THUMBS UP!!!
