Product Review
"one of the most unusual, gorgeous, and quirky quilt books you will find anywhere." [Shirley MacGregor] " undertook to document the beauty of these manhole covers, and beyond that to demonstrate how naturally and gorgeously they are translated into the quilter's art." "Some of the quilts are relatively close copies of the manhole covers, while others take imaginative liberties with the designs. All are unusual and some are breathtaking." --
Rob Holland, The Virtual Quilt, Aug, 1999"Shirley MacGregor writes about the genesis of the book with a lot of humor and includes very interesting bits of Japanese culture and history. The layout and the gorgeous photographs make this book truly enjoyable and original." "I really liked the fact that this is not another "how-to book" but an incredible source of oriental designs, which could be used in very many different ways and settings, leaving each reader free to choose her/his favorite technique to duplicate a design in fabric. It is so refreshing to find a book that encourages creativity." --

Product Description
Quilting with manhole covers is a book of designs taken from manhole covers found in various cities and towns throughout Japan. Intended for quilters, the book includes three versions of the design: a full-color rendition, a black and white silhouette, and a line drawing. A gorgeously hand-crafted quilt is pictured with each design. Each chapter contains a comment on a history or culture of the community whose design is portrayed.
The preface describes how a simple quilting project, (resulting in her award-winning quilt, "Treasures Underfoot"), became a dedicated effort to bring these unique designs from the obscurity of the Japanese streets, to quilters everywhere.
Reader ReviewsQuilting with Manhole Covers was a gift that I have thoroughly enjoyed. It takes your imagination beyond the traditional approach and shows quilting ideas in everything around you, even underfoot. I especially like the line-drawing for each design. The color illustrations get my creative juices flowing.
