From Booklist
This book from NCTE is another impressive addition to its Booklist series. It annotates approximately 400 books published between 1990 and 1992 for children in grades K-8 about African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans/Latinos, and Native Americans. Some books set in countries other than the U.S. are also included. The chapters are arranged according to specific themes rather than cultural or racial groups. The nonfiction topics include "The Arts," "Ceremonies and Celebrations," "History: The Way We Were," and "People to Know and Places to Go." In some instances, a fiction book is included in a theme section: for example, "Ceremonies and Celebrations" lists
An Island Christmas. The fiction listings are divided into four sections by age, from the very young to older readers. The book concludes with a chapter listing anthologies and "A Potpourri of Resources," a list of print materials and organizations to assist the teacher in furthering the study of the diversity of American society. Each entry notes author, title, illustrator, and age level ascertained by the publisher or assigned by the reviewers. Annotations summarize the story or content, refer to the illustrations, and mention honors or awards. References to related books, books by the same author, and books on similar subjects are also noted. Following the annotations are indexes of award-winning books, a directory of publishers, and indexes of authors, illustrators, subjects, and titles. The subject index gives access by racial or ethnic group.
Kaleidoscope, although already two years out of date, is an affordable resource for the classroom teacher, parent, or librarian for recent books about other cultures. It will update
