From AudioFile
Coulter prides herself on stirring things up in politics, and this audiobook will leave her fans cheering and the subjects of her scorn steaming. This sort of tome works well as an audiobook; it's like conservative talk radio honed to a sharp focus and presented on 5 CDs. If one approaches it as performance art, it's highly entertaining; as meaningful political discourse, perhaps not. Coulter dispatches her text quickly and with enthusiasm. But her voice is somewhat droning and nasal, and perhaps she sees more ironic humor in her prose than the average listener, so her attempts at deadpan fall flat. If you're a Coulter fan, you'll like this production, but it's not likely to win converts. Product Description
"If a martian landed in America and set out to determine the nation's official state religion, he would have to conclude it is liberalism, while Christianity and Judaism are prohibited by law.

Many Americans are outraged by liberal hostility to traditional religion. But as Ann Coulter reveals in this, her most explosive book yet, to focus solely on the Left's attacks on our Judeo-Christian tradition is to miss a greater point: liberalism is a religion—a godless one.

And it is now entrenched as the state religion of this county.

Though liberalism rejects the idea of God and reviles people of faith, it bears all the attributes of a religion. In Godless, Coulter throws open the doors of the Church of Liberalism, showing us its sacraments (abortion), its holy writ (Roe v. Wade), its martyrs (from Soviet spy Alger Hiss to cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal), its clergy (public school teachers), its churches (government schools, where prayer is prohibited but condoms are free), its doctrine of infallibility (as manifest in the "absolute moral authority" of spokesmen from Cindy Sheehan to Max Cleland), and its cosmology (in which mankind is an inconsequential accident).

Then, of course, there's the liberal creation myth: Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

For liberals, evolution is the touchstone that separates the enlightened from the benighted. But Coulter neatly reverses the pretense that liberals are rationalists guided by the ideals of free inquiry and the scientific method. She exposes the essential truth about Darwinian evolution that liberals refuse to confront: it is bogus science.

Writing with a keen appreciation for genuine science, Coulter reveals that the so-called gaps in the theory of evolution are all there is—Darwinism is nothing but a gap. After 150 years of dedicated searching into the fossil record, evolution's proponents have failed utterly to substantiate its claims. And a long line of supposed evidence, from the infamous Piltdown Man to the "evolving" peppered moths of England, has been exposed as hoaxes. Still, liberals treat those who question evolution as religious heretics and prohibit students from hearing about real science when it contradicts Darwinism. And these are the people who say they want to keep faith out of the classroom?

Liberals' absolute devotion to Darwinism, Coulter shows, has nothing to do with evolution's scientific validity and everything to do with its refusal to admit the possibility of God as a guiding force. They will brook no challenges to the official religion.

Fearlessly confronting the high priests of the Church of Liberalism and ringing with Coulter's razor-sharp wit, Godless is the most important and riveting book yet from one of today's most lively and impassioned conservative voices.

"Liberals love to boast that they are not 'religious,' which is what one would expect to hear from the state-sanctioned religion. Of course liberalism is a religion. It has its own cosmology, its own miracles, its own beliefs in the supernatural, its own churches, its own high priests, its own saints, its own total worldview, and its own explanation of the existence of the universe. In other words, liberalism contains all the attributes of what is generally known as 'religion.'" —From Godless

Reader Reviews
This review is from: Godless: The Church of Liberalism (Hardcover) Witty exaggeration can indeed be both humorous and entertaining, and I think this is why Ann Coulter's books sell so well. Her black-and-white view of the world which she articulates so well in this book with her razor-sharp wit is reassuring to those who already have such views, and is a guilty fascination to so many others - like a bad car accident from which you cannot look away. However, what will drive the discerning reader of this book insane is not the author's opinions, which she has every right to hold and express, but how she plays fast and loose with the truth to indict an entire group of people - liberals - as godless silly people with a singular creed. For example the author states "Everything liberals believe is in elegant opposition to basic Biblical precepts." What precepts would those be? Perhaps "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's" (Mark 12:13-17; the same passage appears, slightly modified, in Matthew 22:15-22 and Luke 20:20-26)? Or maybe "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction." from the book of James? Another passage in this book that mystifies me is "If a Martian landed in America and set out to determine the nation's official state religion, he would have to conclude it is liberalism, while Christianity and Judaism are prohibited by law. And not just in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where it's actually on the books, but throughout the land." If the outlawing of Christianity is on the books in Cambridge, Massachusetts, why is it, with just a cursory web search, that I can find a listing of 50 churches in the town of Cambridge? Law enforcement must indeed be lax in that jurisdiction if the author's facts are correct. These churches include those of Baptists, Catholics, Mennonites, Nazarenes and Episcopalians. Perhaps Ann does not consider these "real" Christian churches? She does, at least, openly indict Episcopalians as not really counting among the redeemed when she states "Howard Dean left the Episcopal Church--which is barely even a church", so maybe these other Christian groups are not "real churches" by her standard either. I won't argue the fact that there are some real navel-gazers counted among those that wear the liberal label. However, liberals are far from the monolithic group that Ms. Coulter describes. If they were, you would not have such a diverse group as Russ Feingold and Joe Liebermann and their respective supporters sharing the Democratic party and often in real disagreement about its future direction. In summary, I had an easy time debunking many of the author's "facts" with only a casual effort. Before she puts pen to paper next time, maybe she should think about one particular passage that should be very familiar to anyone who embraces her Bible as Ms. Coulter purports to embrace hers: "Do not testify as a false witness against your neighbor" (Exodus 20:16).
