About The Author


Michael Baigent was born in New Zealand in 1948. He graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Canterbury University, Christchurch, and a master of arts degree in mysticism and religious experience from the University of Kent, England. Since 1976 he has lived in England with his wife and children. He is the author of From the Omens of Babylon and Ancient Traces and the co-author of the international bestsellers Holy Blood, Holy Grail and The Messianic Legacy (with Henry Lincoln and Richard Leigh), The Temple and the Lodge, The Dead Sea Scrolls Deception, Secret Germany, The Elixir and the Stone, and The Inquisition. As a religious historian and leading expert in the field of arcane knowledge he has undertaken a two-decade-long quest for the truth about Jesus that has culminated in the publication of this book.

This review is from: The Jesus Papers: Exposing the Greatest Cover-Up in History (Hardcover) Mr. Baigent has recycled a very old idea that Jesus was a mere human being who plotted his own crucifixion. This has been done before and much better in Hugh Schonfield's "The Passover Plot" (1965) which has the added pleasure of reading like a novel. Neither of these books has ANY definitive proof for their suppositions but merely read between the lines of the gospels for a very creative interpretation of John, Mark, Luke and Matthew. "The Jesus Papers" claims secret long-lost documentation (but the rest of the world has never seen it). Mr. Baigent and Mr. Schonfield start from the premise that the resurrestion is an impossible event and attempt to create a human explaination for the "myth." For the reader interested in genuine Bibical scholarship on the historical facts concerning Jesus, I recommend either John Meier's three volume set (so far) of "A Marginal Jew" or Ray Brown's "The Death of the Messiah."
