Reader ReviewsBOOK REVIEW of THE GRACIOUS QUR'AN Translator: Dr. Ahmad Zaki Hammad Publisher: Lucent Interpretations. Copyright 2007 ISBN: 0-9787849-0-1 Genre: Islamic Scriptures Review by: Dr. Seema Imam "The Gracious Qur'an," a modern phrased interpretation in English by internationally known, Dr. Ahmad Zaki Hammad, offers today's English-speaking readers the supreme occasion to read, ponder and embark upon their journey to God or to simply understand the meaning of Qur'an using their own language in a way I have not observed in any previous translation of the Qur'an. This interpretation utilizes a natural word order and renders the text into a cadence familiar to those for whom western English is the native tongue. Besides translation, the rich meaning originally conveyed in Arabic is conveyed through the use of tiny brackets. "The Gracious Qur'an," is both compelling and authoritative. Dr. Hammad is a scholar of Islam whose first language is Arabic. He has lived and studied in the East and the West. In brief, he is a graduate of Al-Azhar University, Cairo and University of Chicago in Chicago. He is a scholar of interpretation, and author of numerous other books. "The Gracious Qur'an," is a rich and smooth interpretation, which is completely refreshing when compared to previous works whose translations are often unnatural for the western reader and filled with archaic word choices, of which some are irrelevant to the modern reader. This modern phrased interpretation is possible due to the focus placed on the process of cataloging in context of each Arabic word in the Qur'an. A complete explanation of the methodology used in this interpretation, which makes it unique is explained in Vol. II. The introduction to "The Gracious Qur'an," includes a lesson on understanding the Holy Book. It tells us there are five spheres to consider: The Qur'an in the World, The Qur'an and its Self-Revealing Names, The Revealed Structure of the Qur'an, The Authenticity of The Qur'anic Text and The Muslim Obligation to Convey the Qur'an. It also includes indexes to God's names, God's attributes, Prophets, Messengers, Life forms, and a General index. All of this academic and meaningful material is essential in our times for Muslims themselves to understand, to study and discuss their own religion in scholarly terms with their religious and worldly circles where Islam and Muslims are the news of the day. Dr. Hammad's interpretation includes letters of review and approval from Al-Azhar Al-Sharif's Islamic Research Academy for Research writing and Translation. It includes a foreword by Dr. Yousuf al-Qaradawi, an introduction by Dr. Ali Gom'ah, The Grand Mufti of Arab Republic of Egypt and a Statement of Review by Dr. Muhammad Abu Laylah, the chairman of Islamic Studies in English and English Language Department at the Faculty of Languages and Translations of Al-Azhar University. The American Muslim community is in great need of such an English translation, particularly as a professor in teacher education, I recommend this interpretation to teachers and educators across the world and most importantly to Muslim educators in America's Islamic schools. We are living in times often critical of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad and the Qur'an. Familiar and scholarly word use best suits Muslim teachers and students if they are to fully grasp the meaning conveyed through the Qur'an when presented in modern English. Thus, in my opinion "This Gracious Qur'an," is authoritative, complete, accessible and much needed in the modern world and most specifically the English speaking world. I recommend it to the Muslim community and the world community. It is ideal for those who seek a world-class education in a global society where critical knowledge of the Quran has become essential.
