From Library Journal
Intended for the general reader, this book aims to provide a survey of Mormon history, background on the history of photographing the Mormons, and a visual record with abundant, interesting, and often gorgeous historical photographs. The last feature makes the book unique and, sad to say, is the only reason for buying it. The text is a bit parochial, and non-Mormons will find that it lacks enough detail to make Mormon history intelligible. Further, though the photographs are quite extraordinary, the bulk of them go to the mid-1940s only, and the chapter of color photographs taken (1951-present) lacks the coherence of the earlier chapters. Finally, the cost makes this a necessary purchase for comprehensive collections only. A pity; clearly, the book is a missed opportunity.
