Product Review
The writing in Eye of the Beholder is precise, gorgeous, forceful, and sincere. Patricia McConnel's use of images from myth and prehistoric art enhances the power of her voice; her technique of slipping in and out of dream and reality is quite astonishing. --Alex Blackburn, Writer's Forum
Product Description
On a day in early autumn, the author drives into the La Sal Mountains near Moab, Utah, intending to go for a hike, forgetting it is the first day of deer hunting season. Her encounters with the hunting culture and her own slippery grip on reality combine to trigger experiences that become increasingly more bizarre as the day progresses.
Reader ReviewsPatricia McConnel writes an account of the day she wandered into the mountains during deer hunting season. Her experiences stretch her tolerance to breaking point, and break she does, into hallucinations intruding themselves into each encounter with the hunters or with what they leave behind, and with a buck deer as well. She way she handles this in the book is gifted. Her descriptions of the country are as good as any nature writing I've ever seen. Beautiful. I love this book and reread it regularly.
