From Library Journal
Drawing from his travels, the author presents a visually pleasing survey of the world's major coral reef and island biomes. Many color photographs, maps, drawings, and informational inserts supplement the text, which focuses on the beauty, complexity, and fragility of these habitats. Exceptionally well covered is the interaction of the geological and life processes that lead to coral reef and island development. The natural history of reef organisms offered here is informational and competent but is readily available elsewhere. In addition, while this book stresses the human activities that imperil the survival of reef communities, The Greenpeace Book of Coral Reefs ( LJ 11/15/92) provides superior coverage of this topic. For comprehensive collections serving lay and YA readers.

Reader ReviewsDo not be discouraged by the fact that this work is the author's first book. It is an excellent work with the content being ratified by some of the world's leading experts. Aimed at any ordinary member of the public who is concerned about the need for protecting and conserving Coral Reefs, William Gray hits his mark spot on. The book is skilfully divided into 6 main chapters which allow the author to carefully build on what has been written so far as he brings the level of knowledge of the reader slowly forward. Beautifully illustrated throughout with outstanding photographs and excellent graphics, I learned a lot from this book. It is the one book every scuba diver and concerned person should read on this topic. NM
