From School Library Journal
Grade 1-4. From the beach of Saona Island off the coast of the Dominican Republic, a hermit crab explores the Caribbean coral reef and its creatures. This book and tape introduce the habitat of the coral reef and island beaches to young readers. In addition to the story, there is some background on Saona Island and the Taino people who live there. Fold-out pages at the back of the book identify the plants and animals shown in the book by name only, and include a scene of the reef and beach. The fiction format is weak on plot. It is more a description of the journey of the hermit crab and reveals his habits and characteristics, as well as identifying other reef animals, corals, and plants. Pictures are soft in coloring. The technical quality of the narration is good. Sound effects increase understanding of undersea life. Teachers and parents will find it helpful to point out each creature as it is mentioned and illustrated. This pleasant, informative book and tape will hold listeners' interest.?Ann Elders, Mark Twain Elementary School, Federal Way, WA
