Peacocke argues that modern advances in molecular and evolutionary biology do not compel the view that all of biology will eventually be reduced simply to physics and chemistry. In rejecting this "reductionism," he argues for an "emergentism," the view that the human and personal actualizes itself through a process of continually developing hierarchical complexity. While Peacocke manages a balanced treatment of the reductionist view in biology, his own holistic approach to biology confirms his theistic conceptions. A challenging but rewarding book that looks at the interrelatedness of nature, humanity, and God. Warmly recommended. E. Robert Paul, History of Science Prog., Dickinson Coll., Carlisle, Pa.
