Product Description
This book is an accessible and comprehensive guide to the theory and practice of short-term treatment. It opens with a chapter on the theoretical foundations of the method before leading to its practical applications in clinical practice. It is highly recommended for all mental health professionals.
Traditionally, psychoanalytic treatment has been a lengthy endeavour, requiring a long-term commitment from patient and analyst, as well as vast financial resources. More recently, short-term approaches to psychoanalytic treatment have proliferated. One of the most well-known and thoroughly-studied is the groundbreaking method of Intensive Short term Dynamic Psychotherapy, developed by Dr Habib Davanloo. Having trained directly with Dr Davanloo, the author has written a clear, concise outline of the method that has come to be regarded as a classic in the field. The book is organized in a systematic fashion, analogous to the process of the therapy itself, from initial contact through to termination and follow-up. Detailed clinical examples are presented throughout the text to illustrate how theory is translated
into techniques of unparalleled power and effectiveness.

Reader Reviews
This review is from: Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy: Theory and Technique (Hardcover)
Dr Della Selva's book is very clearly and concisely written. It provides therapists with a comprehensive guide to not only the theory, but the practice of short-term dynamic psychotherapy. All phases of treatment, from the initital assessment and trial therapy, through to termination, are outlined. Transcripts from Dr Della Selva's own cases illustrate the use of the various techniques. Dr Della Selva describes how to rapidly achieve character change, even with patients with mulitiple symptoms and chronic personality disorders. This book has had an enormous impact on my therapeutic success and has significantly reduced the length of treatment time. I believe it is essential reading for all psychodynamic psychotherapists and for any therapist working with a clinical population.
