Reader Reviews
If I had written this review when this book first came out in 1980 I might have given it a higher rating. However, since I am writing this review in 2008, I have to give it a 3 star rating, which in itself is quite good since I am also the author of several books on the very same subject matter, and therefore, perhaps more critical of the content than I should be. This book was basically written in seven separate sections and I will provide you with a brief review on each section. TECHNIQUES BASIC TO ALL KICKS The author goes on to explain five (5) of the basic principles that should be followed when executing any kick, from the most basic to the most advanced. These principles are tried and true and the author explains them in a very easy to understand manner. This section of this book is basically a repeat of similar sections in the author's two previous books, Dynamic Kicks: Essentials for Free Fighting (Specialties Series) and Advanced Explosive Kicks (Literary Links to the Orient). STRIKING AREAS Take note that this section is an exact repeat of the same section in the author's previous book, Advanced Explosive Kicks. What made this section a little bit better than the similar section which was in the author's first book, Dynamic Kicks, was the author's use of another person in the photographs where he also demonstrates a particular kick being used against a person with the emphasis being on the surface area of the foot used in each instance. This directly corresponds to a smaller photograph which shows a closer view of the surface area of the foot being used. STRETCHING EXERCISES In this section the author briefly demonstrates fifteen (15) basic stretches for the legs and lower back. The first ten stretches demonstrated in this section are for the most part a repeat of the stretches shown in the author's previous book, Advanced Explosive Kicks. The remaining five (5) stretches are all new additions to this book. As in my review of the author's first two books, I must say that I would have preferred to see more detail to go along with the accompanying photographs in this section to explain in greater detail how to perform each stretch that is featured. There was definitely enough space available to do that, and I really wish he had. SIMPLE KICKS The title for this section truly says it all. The author demonstrates the following three basic kicks with very clear photographs, although there is only a brief amount of written text describing the kicking sequences shown. This is one of the major faults that I have with this book and the series in general in that there should have been a lot better descriptions provided with each technique shown. However, the information that is provided is well done, if a bit short. Front Kick (Achieving Kicking Excellence, Vol. 6) Roundhouse Kick (Achieving Kicking Excellence, Vol. 9) Side Kick (Achieving Kicking Excellence, Vol. 10) KICK AND PUNCH COMBINATIONS Although the author demonstrates nine (9) different hand and foot combinations, those shown in this section are not practical as far as an actual self-defense situation goes. Now having said that, I believe that the author's intent was for these to be used in certain martial arts competitions. However, if you go beyond the obvious and look at some of the underlying principles being displayed, some of the information would transfer over quite well on the street. This is not obvious and would probably be overlooked by most people. RUNNING JUMPING KICKS The author demonstrates eight (8) different kicks quite well through the use of photographs and a brief written description. Although, as in the previous sections, there is a definite lack of written description to go along with the photographs. Now that isn't to say that what is written isn't good, its just that there should have been more in-depth and detailed text to go along with the photographs. AIR KICKS As with the aforementioned section, the author demonstrates seven (7) different kicks quite well through the use of photographs and a brief written description. Although, as in the previous sections, there is a definite lack of written description to go along with the photographs. Now that isn't to say that what is written isn't good, its just that there should have been more in-depth and detailed text to go along with the photographs. Overall this is really a pretty good book, and one that I have had in my personal library, along with Chong Lee's other books, for quite some time. I would recommend this book as a generalized introduction to the art of aerial kicking and using punching and kicking in combinations against an opponent in a competition type atmosphere, not on the street.
