Reader Reviews
I read this book for class, and I have to say that it was not really geared towards a beginning student of psychotherapy. Not that it was difficult to understand, or that the concepts were beyond any others that we were learning, but because Connors spends to much time RATIONALIZING that it's OK to focus on helping the patient get relief from symptoms. She longwindedly provides a good deal of evidence for something that many of todays psychology students already know due to education in a variety of treatment models - that being married to one theory of therapy might not be in the best interest of the patient! At times like that, it feels as though she is speaking to the analyst who has been doing the same thing for 25 years and is stuck in their ways. On a positive note, the chapters that specifically deal with behavioral techniques and cognitive techniques are quite useful and are a good refrence for those getting a handle on the basics of CBT; however, I believe that there are much better books for providing a grasp of CBT. If you are looking for a book that shows the benefits of combining various theories of psychotherapy, then this is a passable volume. If you are looking for a helpful treatment manual, check D.R. Ledley or J.H. Wright.
