Grade 5-6-- In Astronomy , Amato begins with the development of ancient astrology and ends with the Hubble Space Telescope and a brief mention of UFOs. In between, she describes discoveries made using ever-more-sensitive telescopes, and major figures and theories that have contributed to our nascent understanding of the universe, illustrated with a combination of sharply reproduced full-color photographs and crude, quirky paintings. The narrative contains several oversimplifications and minor factual errors (Copernicus did not live in the Middle Ages), but Amato frequently interrupts her recitation of names and dates to analyze the importance of a discovery, or to show how scientists have built on one another's work. Like Astronomy, The Earth reads like a term paper--``Eventually, more modern ideas about fossils started to become accepted''--but its account of
geology and the environmental movement also has obvious gaps: there is no illustration of the Earth's deep structure, no mention of the greenhouse effect in the discussion of global warming, nothing about the long-term effects of weather, or the importance of satellite observations in the study of earth science. Furthermore, the author equates destruction of our environment with destruction of the planet, which is a common misconception. Both volumes share text, especially in the early chapters, and close with book lists aimed at adults or YAs. Supplemented and corrected by books such as Beshore's Science in Ancient China and Science in Early Islamic Culture (both Watts, 1988), Astonomy makes a good overview; the scattershot Earth is less useful.
