"Sixteen chapters, interspersed with extremely useful, detailed examples of thesis research, describe clearly and comprehensively the intellectual, practical, and societal milieu in which ecological research is conducted." Choice
A strikingly original treatise encompassing nearly the entire scope of the creative scientific processThis broad and erudite text will benefit anyone involved in ecological research faced with the problem of devising testable and meaningful research questionsthis is not a book that should be kept on the shelf; rather it should be owned, read thoroughly, discussed, and consulted frequently by every graduate student and ecological researchershould be required reading by anyone planning an ecological research project, or planning to advise one." "If I could slip one book through a time warp, back to the 1970s when I was first trying to 'do' science, this would be the oneCurious minds will find no better use for $50This book is simply a clear and readable exposition on the nature of science and research and how one can join the wonderful search for knowledge." Reader ReviewsI found this book while a graduate student and it really helped me refocus my research and move forward. Graduate research can be a daunting endeavor and this book did an excellent job documenting the steps involved in research, both theoretically and practically. The use of an actual students experience as a case study was quite helpful and instructive. The main thing I took from it was the ability to extract the main theoretical bases of my thinking and separate them from the questions I was asking. It has been a few years since I read this book and it is probably time to read it again. This is the first book I recommend to new graduate students in ecology.
