Grade 5-8--One of the great places for children to hone their powers of scientific observation is in the yard, which can provide dirt, sun, insects, rain, wind, and stars for exploration. In these 57 experiments, readers can test ground temperatures, discover the favorite foods of snails, search for tiny insects in soil samples, grow a garden in a tea bag, and make instruments to explore the weather. The activities are straightforward and clearly described in the step-by-step directions. The required materials, which are generally common household items, are listed at the beginning of each procedure. The directions state when adult assistance is needed. A section at the end of each project, called "Action, Reaction, Results," explains the basic concepts involved and will lead less scientifically inclined children to proven answers. Boxed "Word Files" provide definitions of related terms. Although most of the projects can be found in other volumes, these special features make this book an accessible and useful resource. Simple but bland pen-and-ink drawings appear throughout.
