Grade 4-8-Science projects in the areas of space, earth science, geology, botany, machines, and structures are presented in logical steps and illustrated with bold, bright, and clear photographs. Methods of research, organizing the project, conducting the research, and presenting results are covered in detail. Boxed checklists for each step of the activity reinforce the textual material. Experiments and observations run the gamut from old standbys such as checking plant growth and creating a rock collection to more sophisticated experiments with sound and plant dyes. Adequate safety precautions are included. Great care has been taken to make the experiments attractive and accessible. A "Scope and Sequence" chart highlights the skills developed while working on the individual activities. The list for further reading includes a few books that are on a higher reading level than this book and a number of CD-ROM products. This title is more accessible than Janice VanCleave's Guide to the Best Science Fair Projects (Wiley, 1997), but it has far fewer experiments.
